‘Guatemalan Boarders’ Diptych

Original pen & ink drawing on wallpaper

18 x 26 cm each

The inspiration behind this piece was taken from personal experiences travelling the boarder between Chiapas in Mexico and San Pedro La Laguna in Guatemala.

I was feeling adventurous and up for a challenge so decided to take the local chicken buses and hitchhiking from people I met along the way to get to my destination.

The route was longer than I expected, taking 2 or 3 days. So found myself getting lost, I strangely loved this feeling.

I distinctly remember a man called Rodrigo who worked drilling holes for pipes on the motorways offering to show me a place where I could sleep for the night. In return I carried his big roll of water pipes until we got to his friends pickup truck where we sat on the back for a few hours to find a bed.

Unfortunately I had no cash so slept in the car park of the hotel until the owner woke me up and took me to find a cash point. So could finally rest.

The people’s spirit and good will I met along the way gave me certain hope and faith that I would eventually be in safe ground.

See in part 2 I drew the isolated hotel on the road side. The landscapes were dry and hot and people were far and few. A memory I will never forget.
